Interview With Nick Tart (Part 2): How Young Entrepreneurs Can Apply the Other 8 Hours
This is an excerpt from an audio interview with Nick Tart, founder of www.juniorbiz.com
Nick:
Your concept of having an extra 8 hours in your day is pretty amazing. When you actually sit down and think about it. How can the other 8 hour principle be applied to the life of the young entrepreneur?
Robert:
Well, I think you said it just a few minutes ago. You said when you talk to a lot entrepreneurs and you ask them how many hours they work that week, they say “every moment when I’m awake I’m working”.
Nick:
Yeah.
Robert:
And so, I mean, that’s both a blessing and a curse. As an entrepreneur you need to have that sort of energy and the passion, and you know when you’re awake you’re just working, working, working. So that’s good but one of the problems that I found in working with entrepreneurs and even in my own life is that we can really be sort of single track focused where all we’re doing 100% of our waking hour is just working on our business. And what happen though is that other areas of our life sort of fall off. So the other areas might be just our relationships with our family, with our friends, it can be our health, it can be our…if you’re religious maybe your spirituality. And so it’s important that when you look at your life as whole and not just sort of with a laser the time that you’re dedicating to your business absolutely focus on it 100% like a laser but take a step back and try to schedule things because that’s what I found really works is it on your calendar you schedule whether it’s a 45 minutes everyday to go to the gym you know to ride your bike which you’re already doing which is [scratchy sound] but to schedule that because if it’s not scheduled and you’re an entrepreneur it just ain’t going to get done because you’re going to be so focused on building the business. And of course the danger is if you spend all of your time building your business, A. you might have a really good business but B. you’re not going to be in good shape and you’re not going to be all that well rounded and you might not be that happy. So I definitely think spending some of the other 8 hours doing the other things in your life that are important to you. You know sort of above and beyond just focusing on your business.
